Matt Sokolowski, a.k.a Coach Soko, began his lacrosse journey in the 6th grade as one of twelve founding members of the Moorestown, New Jersey boys program, led by Val Curran. Traditionally recognized as a hotbed for elite girls lacrosse, they became the first boys lacrosse program in South Jersey in over 20 years, and with no initial home field, they traveled to private schools in North Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland to find competition.
Coach Curran’s prior lacrosse career carried him from the Boys Latin School of Maryland and Duke University as an All-American Midfielder, to coaching the McDonough School boys program. Outside of a continued stress on developing fundamentals, his major point of emphasis before stepping onto the field each season was to reinforce the core tenets of the “Creator’s Game”: a game of honor created by the indigenous people of North America (Haudenosaunee/Iroquois), where a mutual respect for all involved, especially opponents, was key to finding meaningful success in the modern game.
Matt was recruited by George Harris to play Attack at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, where he was a nominee for Liberty League Rookie of the Year after scoring 27 goals as a starting Freshman. Prior to his Junior season, Terry Corcoran was announced as the program’s successor directly following two seasons as the University of Pennsylvania Head Coach. Transitioning from an NCAA Division III to Division I structure overnight, and under the guidance of one of the all-time win leaders at the collegiate level, showcased how diverse the game can be from a schematic and preparation standpoint.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Design, Matt returned to New Jersey as a Nike Lacrosse Camp counselor at Lawrenceville Prep in the Summer and the Moorestown 5/6 Head Coach in the Spring. Since moving to Seattle in 2001, he has been a youth 3/4 and 5/6 coach at North Seattle, a 5/6 and 7/8 coach at Shoreline, a High School coach at Lakeside School and a 2026 club travel team coach for the NW Kraken.
Matt’s experience and knowledge gained, both as a longtime player and coach, will help to build a strong foundation for Shoreline LFP now and into the future.
